Bio

Dr. Marcia Gumpertz has been a member of the North Carolina State University (NCSU) faculty since 1989. In 1989 she joined the Statistics Department as an assistant professor, from 1995 to 2000 served as associate professor, and was promoted to full professor in 2000. In 2006 she joined the Office for Diversity and Inclusion as Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty and Staff Diversity. She holds degrees from the University of California (AB in Philosophy), Oregon State University (MS in Statistics), and NCSU (PhD in Statistics).

Dr. Gumpertz focuses on statistical applications in agriculture and the environment, spatial statistics, mixed-effects models, and design of experiments. From 2002 to 2006 she served as the Director of Undergraduate Programs in Statistics. She was active in both mentoring undergraduates and assessing the effectiveness of the undergraduate program. In 2004 her work with undergraduates was recognized with the NCSU Academic Advising Administrator Award. She is co-author of the textbook Planning, Construction, and Statistical Analysis of Comparative Experiments. Dr. Gumpertz is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and is recipient of the American Statistical Association Section on Statistics and the Environment Distinguished Achievement Award.She received the NCSU Statistics Departments 2011-12 Cavell Brownie Mentoring Award for leadership on campus to promote mentoring of junior faculty and initiatives to create support groups and facilitate mentoring for women and minorities.

Dr. Gumpertz served as Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Diversity from 2006 to 2017, where her charge was to promote diversity among the NC State Faculty and to facilitate campus actions to enhance climate, to support faculty success and to celebrate faculty diversity.Dr. Gumpertz has a long-standing interest and involvement in promoting success of women and girls in science and mathematics. She served as the chair of the NCSU Association for Women Faculty for two years, and has been a member of its steering team since 2001.Since 2007 she has coordinated NCSUs annual Building Future Faculty Program, a three-day workshop for graduate students and postdocs working toward a faculty career. In 2009 she developed the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) Diversity Mentoring Program, and has been involved with that program most years since then. She chaired the 2015 StatFest planning committee; StatFest is a one-day conference designed to introduce diverse quantitatively inclined undergraduate students to the fields of statistics and biostatistics.
