Bio

I am a math professor at the University of Iowa. I earned my PhD from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2005. After two short postdocs one at the University of Iowa and the second one at Rice, I was hired as a tenure track faculty at the University of Iowa. I am currently an Associate Professor. Besides math, I spend a lot of time thinking about diversity. I am particularly interested in figuring out what goes wrong early on in kids' academic lives that so few math majors are Hispanic or African-American. As the mother of an African-American girl I have become very sensitive to the subtle and often not so subtle messages teachers, administrators and other kids send young girls of color. It is always exciting for me to meet a minority student who has become successful in the STEM fields and try to understand how they did it.
