Bio

Dmaris Santana-Morant was born in Puerto Rico. She earned a bachelor's degree in Computational Mathematics from the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao and a M.S. degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Puerto Rico, Ro Piedras. In the summer of 1997, she participated in the Mathematical and Theoretical Biology Institute at Cornell University which inspired her to pursue a graduate degree in Statistics. In 2001, she obtained a M.S. degree in Biometry from Cornell University and in 2005 a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Florida, both with Dr. George Casella as her advisor. She is now a Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagez. Her interests include Statistical Genetics, Environmental Statistics, and Education. Dr. Santana-Morant was Co-director of Puerto Rico Experiences in Mathematics and Undergraduate Research (PREMUR) at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagez in the summer of 2007. PREMUR was designed to provide its participants with a meaningful research-oriented experience in mathematics and to encourage them to attend graduate school, among others. She has also participated in AlACiMa and AFAMaC, both programs to train and support teachers in mathematics. While in AlACiMa, she supported undergraduate students doing research on effective methods to teach mathematics.
