Bio
Dagan Karp is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College. He arrived at HMC in the Fall of 2008 from the Department of Mathematics at UC Berkeley where he was first an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow, and later an NSF RTG Visiting Assistant Professor. Prior to Berkeley, he received his PhD in Mathematics from the University of British Columbia. He received both his MSc in Mathematics and BS double major in Mathematics and Physics from Tulane University.
His research is centered in algebraic geometry and Gromov-Witten theory. The latter is an exciting subject intersecting such areas as theoretical physics, enumerative geometry, combinatorics and representation theory. He has supervised undergraduate research in Gromov-Witten theory, classical algebraic geometry, representation theory, commutative algebra and tropical geometry. He is also Associate Chair of the Department of Mathematics and, beginning in 2016-2017 academic year,he will be the Associate Dean for Diversity at Mudd.
His interests also include work to broaden participation in the mathematical sciences. For example, he launched the Seminar on Underrepresentation and the Mathematical Sciences (SUMS) at HMC, co-organized the 2012 conference Broadening Participation in the Mathematical Sciences, serves on the Human Resources Advisory Committee of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, co-editing and co-founding the e-Mentoring Mathematics Network blog hosted by the AMS, and is a a very active SACNAS member. His SACNAS experience includes co-organizing many scientific symposia at SACNAS National Conferences, serving as the Claremont SACNAS Chapter Faculty Sponsor, and serving on the SACNAS National Mathematics Task Force.
Dagen is also on the Diversity Committee for the Park City Mathematics Institute, the Advisory Board of USTARS, and is currently serving as Chair of the Diversity Committee for the Western Algebraic Geometry Seminar.
