Bio

Dr. Adrian Coles, the Senior Research Scientist at Eli Lilly and Company, served as the Math Alliance Director for Industrial Relations from 2019-2021. Dr. Coles still advises the Math Alliance about ways to best serve the private sectors growing need for a diverse workforce with strong mathematical, statistical, and quantitative training. Adrian is the current chair of the American Statistical Associations Committee on Minorities in Statistics, a group that delivers two crucial annual programs that aim to increase participation in statistics and data science by members of historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. He leverages the experiences gained from broad participation in diversity and inclusion initiatives in his service to the Math Alliance. Dr. Coles holds a BA in Math from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a Ph.D. in Statistics from NC State University, where he was the first African American male to earn a Ph.D. in Statistics from the time-honored department. Prior to attending graduate school, Dr. Coles served nearly nine years in the United States Marine Corps and has received several military awards and decorations for outstanding service and leadership.
