City College of New York: Department of Mathematics
Since 1847, The City College of New York has provided low-cost, high-quality education for New Yorkers. Currently, City College is widely recognized as one of the most diverse campuses in the country.
Our mathematics department currently has 28 full-time faculty who teach our courses, mentor students, and engage students in research projects on a variety of topics. Our Master of Science (M.S.) program serves a range of students interested in strengthening their understanding of mathematics. The degree has a great deal of flexibility and is suitable for students with varying interests. Courses cover essential areas of pure and applied mathematics including Algebra, Real and Complex Analysis, Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems, Probability, Statistics, and Topology. Courses generally meet in the late afternoon and early evening hours to help accommodate students who are teaching or working during the day.
Recent graduates from our Master's program have gone on to PhD programs at the CUNY Graduate Center, Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University, Rice University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Maryland, University of Minnesota and the Stevens Institute of Technology in subject areas including Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Computer Science. Other students went on to teaching positions in high schools and in 2 or 4-year colleges or to industry positions such as in finance/banking, biomedical, engineering, and various startup firms.

Student body profile
Our student body is quite diverse, with over 40% of our students female, and 30-40% underrepresented minorities. Over 70% of our students are US citizens or permanent residents, and we attract students from several different backgrounds (such as: math, physics, engineering, computer science, and economics).
Funding opportunities
The department offers a fellowship program from the Dr. Barnett and Jean Hollander Rich Mathematics endowment. These scholarships are competitive but applicants will know at the time of admission about their fellowship status. Qualified students may also have the opportunity for adjunct teaching but typically not within the first semester of their studies.
