Programs offered

The Department offers MSc and PhD in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The main research areas include: algebraic geometry, category theory and its applications, combinatorics, commutative algebra, computational mathematics, complex analysis, complex geometry, differential geometry, dynamical systems, fractals, fluid dynamics, Lie theory, mathematical biology, partial differential equations, representation theory, topology, quantum groups. Our research groups have weekly seminars. Graduate students also organize Graduate Student Research seminars in several subjects.

Student body profile

Our graduate students play an important role in departmental programs and outreach activities. The majority of our students are US citizens and quite a few did their undergraduate studies at UCR. The department created several awards to recognize the role of graduate students.

Funding opportunities

All our incoming students receive Teaching Assistantships and fellowships. Several students each year are nominated by the Department for Graduate Research Mentoring Program and Dissertation Year Program fellowships. The Department and individual faculty members often support graduate students' participation in various workshops and conferences. Our department is an academic sponsor of the MSRI which provides funding for up to three students each year to attend their graduate summer workshops. Some of our graduate students obtained prestigious national research scholarships (NSF and Fulbright).
