The Iowa Regent's Summer Research Experience (REU)

Dates: June 7th - July 30th 2010

The National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in the Mathematical Sciences hosts a National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). The departments of Mathematics and Statistics at Iowa State University, The University of Iowa, and the University of Northern Iowa each host a research program for undergraduate students who are considering going to graduate school in a math science.

We think you will find our program a unique experience! Here are some of the opportunities available:
  • Learn about our people and our culture in our state and in our region
  • Experience the life and work of a graduate student at a research university
  • Alliance Research Symposium: At the end of the program, students will present their research at a large symposium that will bring together all of the students from each school.
  • Alliance Scholarships (see below!)

Biostatistics

The Alliance is pleased to inform you about our partner program, the Iowa Summer Institute in Biostatistics (ISIB), at the University of Iowa. Students in this program will share social and cultural experiences as a part of the Alliance community. ISIB has a separate admissions procedure, and separate eligibility requirements, and we encourage you to take a look at their program here.

Overview

All expenses are paid. Students will receive a stipend of $3,200 (which includes a stipend for breakfast and lunch), as well as room and a dinner contract on campus, as well as round-trip airfare.

Alliance Scholarships

Students will have the opportunity to apply for a year-long grant of up to $5,000. Funds can be used for things like: attending and presenting work at conferences during the year, weekly visits to a nearby graduate mathematics department, and visits to the scholar's Iowa Regent mentor. In short, anything you need that will help you toward your graduate career. Up to half of the students in the REU at any of the three Iowa schools will be awarded these grants!

Eligibility

To be eligible for the summer research program, you must meet the following requirements:
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • Should have normally completed the sophomore year and have two semesters of calculus (see any additional requirements for each individual project or school); graduating seniors will not normally be considered
  • Should be pursuing an undergraduate degree in a math science
  • First preference will be given to Alliance Scholars. If you are a student at a school with an Alliance Mentor, please contact them about your nomination. If there is additional space available, preference will be given to students from groups which are historically underrepresented in the mathematical sciences. Please contact Kristin Gilchrist for more details.

Steps to Apply

We will start reviewing applications on March 5th, and the final deadline for all applications to be in is March 19th by 5 p.m. (CST). The sooner you apply, the sooner you can be considered!

Applying is easy! We are happy to offer you a number of different research projects to choose from this year. When you apply, we will ask you to pick your top four research projects on the application. Projects are being offered at Iowa State University, The University of Iowa, and The University of Northern Iowa.

Please read about all of the research projects by going to the page for each school to explore the research opportunities available to you. Please note that different universities have different formats for their summer programs. Some offer a workshop (class) for part of the summer in addition to the research projects.
After you have read about each school's program, you should complete the online REU application.

If you have any questions or concerns about any of the projects being offered at any of the schools, or about the application process, please don't hesitate to contact us!
