Alliance Undergraduate Mentors
The core of the National Alliance is its group of Faculty Mentors. These mentors fall into two categories: Alliance Undergraduate Mentors and Alliance Graduate Mentors (
read more about alliance graduate mentors here).
Alliance Undergraduate Mentors are typically math sciences faculty at colleges and universities that serve a high percentage of undergraduate students who are underrepresented in the mathematical sciences. These are mentors who, typically, have a doctoral degree in a math science and who have committed themselves to encouraging students at their institution to pursue graduate education. As Alliance Undergraduate Mentors, these faculty are eligible to nominate their students as Alliance Scholars. There is support available for them to accompany their students to professional meetings, and they are encouraged to attend the annual Alliance Conference. There are also opportunities for them to travel to Alliance Graduate Departments to participate in Alliance REUs and, while there, to engage in collaboration with resident faculty. Alliance Undergraduate Mentors play two key roles. First, they nominate Alliance Scholars and serve on the mentoring team for these Scholars. Second, they participate in National Alliance faculty committees in areas such as governance, curriculum, and external funding.
