About

The National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in the Mathematical Sciences is pleased to announce the Fourth Annual Iowa Mathematical Field of Dreams Conference, held this year in Iowa City.

The conference grows each year! This year we expect over 100 Alliance Scholars with over 50 Alliance Mentors. This conference will introduce students from groups which are underrepresented in the mathematical sciences to graduate programs in mathematics and statistics at Alliance Graduate Departments as well as professional opportunities in these fields. Representatives of other quantitative fields will be available to discuss opportunities in these areas.

Student participants will spend time with faculty mentors from the Alliance schools, get advice on graduate school applications, and attend seminars on graduate school preparation and expectations as well as career seminars. Participating faculty will enjoy an opportunity to network with colleagues from around the country and with representatives of national Mathematical Sciences Institutes.

How to Apply for both the Field of Dreams Conference and the Opportunities for Graduate School in Quantitative Biomedical Research Workshop

Students

Opportunities for Graduate School in Quantitative Biomedical Research

The conference will be preceded by an NIH funded workshop on Opportunities for Graduate School in Quantitative Biomedical Research and all Alliance scholars attending the conference are encouraged to attend the workshop. This will include information on, and discussion of, opportunities in biostatistics, mathematical biology, bioinformatics, statistical genetics, biomedical engineering and related areas. Some NIH funding is available for full funding of non-Alliance scholars as well, but such students should have a letter of recommendation from both a biology faculty member and a mathematics or statistics faculty member. Cost-sharing opportunities for MARC and McNair program directors are available, and Directors can please contact biostatistics@uiowa.edu. Priority for non-Alliance scholars will be given to juniors and seniors who are majoring in both a biological science and a mathematical science, or, those who are majoring in one and have a minor in the other. All students attending the workshop will be expected to attend the following conference.

Iowa Mathematical Field of Dreams Conference

Attendance to the conference is by invitation only and is generally limited to Alliance Scholars and students attending the workshop. Priority will be given to those who will be eligible to enter a graduate program in the quantitative sciences within the next two years; this includes recent graduates. Freshman and sophomores may apply and will be supported as funds allow. Students in an MS program at an institution which does not offer a doctoral program are also welcome. If you are selected to attend, we will pay for your travel and local expenses.

If you are interested in attending this conference, please ask your Alliance Mentor to nominate you. If you are not presently an Alliance Scholar and would like to become one, please contact us at mathalliance@uiowa.edu.

There is no deadline! We will begin reviewing nominations and making student selections on May 15th. Students will be notified within a few weeks of submitting their application.

Mentors

If you are currently an Alliance Mentor we will be contacting you in the near future to determine your interest in attending the conference and to ask you for a list of your scholars that you would like to nominate to attend. If you are interested in becoming an Alliance Mentor, please visit our home page for more information about the Alliance and our mentors and then please fill out the Mentor Form.
