About

The National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in the Mathematical Sciences is pleased to announce the Fifth Annual Mathematical Field of Dreams Conference, held this year at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. The Conference brings together faculty in the mathematical sciences and students who are from backgrounds which are underrepresented in those fields. Here are some of the benefits of attending:

Undergraduate Students:

You will have the opportunity to learn about the ins and outs of applying for - and thriving in - a graduate program in the math sciences.

Our Alliance Grad Student panel discuss the graduate experience. They will talk about the best strategies for success, and how to pick a graduate program which will welcome, support and mentor you throughout your graduate studies. Our Alliance Faculty will share with you what they look for when admitting a graduate student, what undergraduate courses are essential to your success in grad school and what their expectations are when you enter their program Our Alliance Doctoral Alumni Panel will share their wisdom with you and tell you about their different career paths and the plusses and minuses of each.

You will also have the opportunity to meet with faculty and students from individual Alliance Graduate Program Groups during our Graduate Fair.

Graduate Students:

This is a great opportunity to meet other Alliance Grad students and to share your work, your goals and your dreams. You will also have the opportunity to meet Alliance Graduate Faculty and to learn about our Postdoc program.

Faculty and Industrial Partners:

Our Conference is an opportunity for faculty to discuss common research interests and to form research partnerships. It gives Alliance Graduate Faculty an opportunity to get to know some of the most promising undergraduate students in the math sciences today. It is also an opportunity for faculty who would like to know more about the Alliance to learn, first hand, about our goals and activities. Finally, the Alliance welcomes representatives of government agencies and industry who are interested in meeting our community of students and faculty.

How to Apply for the Field of Dreams Conference

Undergraduates and Students in Masters Programs:

Attendance to the conference is by invitation only and is generally limited to Alliance Scholars. Priority will be given to those who will be eligible to enter a graduate program in the quantitative sciences within the next two years; this includes recent graduates. Freshman and sophomores may apply and will be supported as funds allow. Students in an MS program at an institution which does not offer a doctoral program are also welcome. If you are selected to attend, we will pay for your travel and local expenses. Students must be U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents to apply.

If you are interested in attending this conference, please ask your Alliance Mentor to nominate you. If you are not presently an Alliance Scholar and would like to become one, please contact us at mathalliance@uiowa.edu.

The deadline for applying is September 6! However, we will start making our selections on August 10 and these slots will fill up quickly. So be sure to apply as soon as possible!

Doctoral Students:

If you are a student at a department with an Alliance Graduate Program Group (click here for a list of graduate program groups), please contact one of the Alliance Graduate Faculty in your department. If your department has no Graduate Program Group, please contact us at mathalliance@uiowa.edu.

Mentors:

If you are currently an Alliance Mentor we will be contacting you in the near future to determine your interest in attending the conference and to ask you for a list of your scholars that you would like to nominate to attend. If you are interested in becoming an Alliance Mentor, please visit our home page for more information about the Alliance and our mentors and then please fill out the Mentor Form.
