Undergraduate Mentor
California State University, Fullerton»
» Personal WebsiteAngel R. Pineda is originally from Honduras where he attended high school. He received his B.S. in chemical engineering from Lafayette College (1995), his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Arizona (2002) and his postdoctoral training in the radiology department of Stanford University (2006). He has been an assistant professor of mathematics at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) since 2007.
In his research, he applies mathematics and statistics to improve medical imaging. His main contributions have been in the assessment of image quality in x-ray imaging (digital radiography and computed tomography) and optimization of data acquisition in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). His research has led to 17 peer-reviewed publications, more than 450 citations and 4 U.S. patents.
As a research mentor, he has worked with nine undergraduate and two graduate students in research projects supported through grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Center for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics (CURM) and the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) program. He also has mentored a team of students working on a consulting project for General Electric Healthcare as part of the masters in applied mathematics at CSUF. He currently serves in the national subcommittee on undergraduate research of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). His students have presented their research at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, published undergraduate papers, co-authored peer-reviewed journal articles and attended Ph.D. programs.
Dr. Pineda only speaks of himself in the third person when writing biographies and would be happy to mentor students who are interested in applied and industrial mathematics.
